It has been six months since Russia invaded Ukraine. Millions of Ukrainians have fled, thousands have died and Russia has captured and occupied parts of the country.

  • Keith Darden, associate professor in the School of International Service at American University, said there is no diplomatic solution now, because the Ukrainians think they can get the Russians to retreat and the Russians are committed for the long term.
  • Darden said he agrees with analysts who say the war is at an operational standstill and said it is becoming a long, exhausting conflict similar to World War I.
  • He said the weapons the U.S. recently pledged to send will be very important for preventing further Russian offensives, particularly in the south.
