Getting artificial intelligence right for the American warfighter and ensuring public trust in this area are critical. The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) recently released a “Responsible Artificial Intelligence Strategy and Implementation Pathway.”
- Jane Pinelis, chief of AI assurance at the DoD Joint Artificial Intelligence Center, said the document provides “very precise” guidance to the department on operationalizing and implementing responsible AI principles.
- Some of the principles involve traceability, “justified confidence” and bias mitigation.
- One of the major reasons the department has been slow to adopt AI is the highly risk-averse culture, said Pinelis.
