After the fatal suicide bombing at the Kabul airport last summer, the Army conducted an investigation. That 2,000-page report was released to the Washington Post through a Freedom of Information Act request. It provides a detailed account of the evacuation and the effort to secure the airport as thousands tried to escape the Taliban.

  • Dan Lamothe, reporter for The Washington Post, said the report shows that coordination between the State and Defense Departments on the withdrawal was “a lot more strained” than it seemed at the time.
  • Lamothe said the State Department showed an initial lack of urgency, including that the acting ambassador wanted to keep an embassy open as long as possible as the situation on the ground became increasingly desperate.
  • He said American troops were placed in greater danger than was necessary, especially taking into account the late start of the evacuation.
