During a trip to sub-Saharan Africa in early August, Secretary of State Antony Blinken unveiled a new strategy for engaging African states as partners.

  • Mvemba Phezo Dizolele, senior fellow and director of the Africa Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said the strategy’s focus on African agency is a “big departure” from previous documents.
  • The U.S. needs to demonstrate its intent to partner with Africans, and the strategy document underscores this need, said Dizolele.
  • Blinken’s visit was an important first step but execution of the strategy will be critical, he said.
