The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Office of Inspector General (IG) warns that undocumented Personal Identity Verification (PIV) cards pose a security risk. The VA’s IG office found that none of the PIV cards tested met the security requirements.
- Michael Missal, inspector general of the VA, said his office’s investigation found the department is not properly tracking who has the cards or ensuring they were returned, which is a serious issue.
- Missal said the PIV cards give contractors access to veteran healthcare information, personal data like social security numbers and entry to multiple government facilities.
- Missal said the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) has responsibility for tracking the PIV cards but that VHA does not agree.
