Defense Department personnel, both civilian and uniformed, have a new ethics code of conduct. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin writes the code comports with President Biden’s efforts to restore trust in government.
- Former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Roger Zakheim said it is unclear whether this is a direct response to the Jan. 6 riot. He said it does not make major changes and is more of an emphasis that this is a priority for the secretary.
- The White House also released an interim national security strategy yesterday; Zakheim said China is prominent in this document and that an emphasis on looking for areas of cooperation with China and Russia is a shift from the previous administration’s strategy.
- Zakheim said there is speculation that the Biden administration “would go deeper in arms control and, in some ways, be willing to give up our strategic deterrence.”
