A nuclear war should never be fought, but according to former Deputy Under Secretary of the Navy Seth Cropsey, if the United States demonstrates unwillingness to use nuclear weapons, the chance that the Kremlin will do so becomes real.

  • Cropsey, founder and president of the Yorktown Institute, said Putin might use a nuclear weapon if Ukraine wins all the conventional fighting and “he feels he has no other choice.”
  • Cropsey said NATO’s use of conventional attacks to demonstrate resolve “sends a very dangerous message” to Russia and the rest of the world.
  • He said a powerful, modern nuclear deterrent is the best defense.
