76% of the workforce at the Internal Revenue Service trusts its leaders to respond well to future emergencies, according to the 2021 Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey. That result is because of the agency’s response to the pandemic.

  • Dave Wennergren, former assistant deputy chief management officer at the Department of Defense, now chief executive officer of the American Council for Technology – Industry Advisory Council, said trust in government has been on the decline for years but the “single biggest thing” leaders can do right now to increase trust is to have transparency, built on data-driven decisions and evidence-based policies.
  • Wennergren highlighted agility as another element in fostering trust, specifically transforming major government processes by increasing acquisition speed, involving employees and recognizing processes can be optimized.
  • Working on character, setting the tone and reducing risk aversion are essential for leaders, said Wennergren.
