The Department of Labor will get $9.6 million for data infrastructure modernization from the Technology Modernization Fund. It was the first award after the fund got a $1 billion boost in the latest coronavirus relief bill.
- Dave Wennergren, former CIO of the Navy, said going forward we will likely see a mix of larger programs and programs similar in size to what exists, and larger projects will be necessary in order to spend the money effectively in the next couple years.
- Wennergren said he recommends agencies take on projects that show results in months instead of years because expectations for the TMF will be high and modernization efforts work best when they stay ahead of the pace of technological change.
- In response to the lack of Defense Department projects funded by the TMF so far, Wennergren said agencies with large IT budgets may not be inclined to use the TMF because of the “strings attached” but that the TMF may be more appealing to them now that it has additional funds.
