The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is warning its law enforcement partners about two anniversaries in August that could generate violent extremist attacks. It’s part of DHS’s strategy to deal with homegrown violent extremism.

  • Triana McNeil, director of homeland security and justice issues at the Government Accountability Office, said the department’s strategy successfully outlines a vision and objectives for countering extremism but falls short with specific performance measures and investments needed.
  • McNeil said the plan does not fully take into account external factors such as the pandemic and advances in extremists’ use of social media.
  • McNeil said DHS has established a data governance council and framework for using and sharing information but needs to further incorporate data on targeted violence and terrorism prevention.
