51 members of Congress are joining the National Federation of Federal Employees in opposing the plan to privatize the Job Corps Civilian Conservation Centers. The program, administered under the Forest Service, provides training and education for youth. Steve Lenkart, executive director of the National Federation of Federal Employees, says that the federal program has broad support across the country.
“We have a petition to Congress for organizations to keep the centers open, and we are asking people to contact members of Congress in both the House and Senate, Lenkart said. The program has widespread support with Democrats and Republicans… They are angered by this move from Secretary Purdue, who unfortunately I think was set up by Secretary Acosta. Congress has been very receptive to reversing this trend of closing these centers.”
