During the Obama administration, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management implemented the Veterans Employment Initiative, a hiring practice that emphasized bringing veterans into the federal workforce. Now that the Trump administration is in full swing, how has the initiative performed so far? “The initiative was a success in terms of raw and aggregate numbers,” said Nick Armstrong, senior director of the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University. “If you look at just the number of veterans who have been brought into the federal government over that seven to eight-year timespan, you are looking at a jump from 24 percent of new hires to almost a third of every new hire by 2015‑16… big success.” “Part of our project was to dig little bit deeper to take a look at how it had been implemented at the agency level,” Armstrong continued. “You start to peel it back and you start to see pockets of excellence in variation in terms of performance and both success stories and struggles here and there.”
