As Russian military action against Ukraine unfolds and American sanctions are imposed, there are concerns about Russian cyber attacks against the United States.
- James Lewis, senior vice president and director of the Strategic Technologies Program at CSIS, said a Russian cyber attack against U.S. critical infrastructure, such as the power grid, is unlikely because it would not advance Putin’s interests.
- Lewis said Putin may encourage Russian cyber criminals to increase the pace of ransomware as an alternative but may do nothing at all.
- He said the risk of escalation between the U.S. and Russia, as nuclear powers, makes cyber confrontations less likely.
