Military services say they will rely on Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to fight the future fight, but the department may be leaving better, less fragile technology on the table.

  • Richard Mason, senior engineer at the RAND Corporation, said risks and disruption from jamming of GPS systems tend to be overstated.
  • Mason said backup technology exists and there is low likelihood that GPS will be intercepted over a large area for a long period of time.
  • Location technology in smartphones is on the horizon as a relevant, continuously improving field, said Mason.
