Veterans make up about 31% of the federal workforce, which has not changed since 2014. The Interagency Veterans Advisory Council hopes to boost that number while tackling issues of retention and attrition.

  • Terry Gerton, president and chief executive officer of the National Academy of Public Administration, said organizations can use best practices to incentivize veterans to stay, including understanding military culture, assigning a mentor or ensuring connection to a team, focusing on training and skill development and setting a vision for a career trajectory.
  • Gerton said veterans provide unique value to government missions because they are resourceful, dedicated, technically skilled, adaptable and highly diverse.
  • While 31% is a great number, anything the federal government can do to make employment more welcoming to veterans is beneficial, Gerton said.
