Roxana Tiron, defense reporter at Bloomberg Government, discusses the impact the DoD audit could have on future funding, and what Congress is looking for in the report.
As the Defense Department budget expands each year, Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney has indicated that DoD spending could be at its peak for the foreseeable future. With results from the Pentagon’s audit expected within the month, the problems found could spell the end for the trend. Roxana Tiron, defense reporter at Bloomberg Government says that DoD Comptroller David Norquist is worried about the impact the audit’s results will have on public support for the Pentagon. “He has a very legitimate concern that if the audit finds problems, which they are expecting to find, that there will be a public backlash against the Pentagon and against increasing defense spending,” Tiron said. “He was asked the question of whether or not this was reminiscent of the Reagan era buildup where we saw news about a $435 claw hammer. He says that is something that the Pentagon is worried about and he is trying to get ahead of the problem.”
