The new budget request from the Biden administration is loaded with surprises for budget watchers. It includes things people did not see coming and leaves out some things people were expecting.
- Mark Cancian, former chief of the Force Structure and Investment Division at the Office of Management and Budget, said the decommissioning of 12 Navy ships is a step back after bipartisan consensus that the fleet needs to get larger.
- Cancian said the support for all three legs of the U.S. nuclear triad, a group of weapons systems used for deterrence, departs from previous talk of cutting spending in that area.
- The persistence of the F-35 aircraft program was another surprise, but changes could still happen in the National Security Strategy next January or February, said Cancian.
