Tensions continue to rise between China and Taiwan over disputed islands in the South China Sea. If China attacks Taiwan, how would leaders at the Pentagon respond?
- Timothy Heath, senior international defense researcher at the RAND Corporation, explained that Beijing has not given up hope of incorporating Taiwan into China even though Taiwan has been governing independently for years.
- As China adds pressure with intimidation tactics and routinely threatens Taiwan, the United States seeks to maintain stability in the region and follow up on its “implied” commitment to support Taiwan, said Heath.
- He said the Pentagon can use its advantage in undersea warfare to respond to aggression and said diplomacy is very important for deterrence.
