Kristen Kociolek, director at the Government Accountability Office, discusses why the Department of Defense needs to change their accounting adjustment practices and what recommendations GAO has for the Pentagon.

The Department of Defense’s accounting adjustments are used to make their financial systems work with the balances from the Treasury. These adjustments amounted to $35 billion last year. the Government Accountability Office recently examined these balance changes, and recommended the Pentagon cut back on their use, Kristen Kociolek, director at GAO, says that account problems can be compounded by these adjustments.

“When you are seeing lots of adjustments being posted and different types of adjustments that we talk about in the report, that’s where you start to see that the adjustments can be symptomatic of underlying deficiencies and getting behind what is causing those adjustments to happen is where departments need to focus,” Kociolek said.
