The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will spend $80 million on public health IT personnel. The funding initiative focuses on the diversity of the health IT workforce.

  • Lisa Lewis, deputy national coordinator of operations in the Office of National Coordinator for Health Information Technology at HHS, said the program’s goal is to train 4,000 new public health workers in informatics and technology across the country.
  • Lewis and Elise Sweeney Anthony, J.D., executive director of the Office of Policy at HHS, said the team is working with minority-serving institutions to identify candidates who can lead or engage in consortiums.
  • Anthony said they also want to make sure that after the four-year period of the cooperative agreement, the programs can continue.
