The National Guard will be staying at the U.S. southern border at least through summer 2023, with troop numbers being capped at 2,500.

• Theresa Cardinal Brown, managing director of immigration and cross-border policy at the Bipartisan Policy Center, explained the difference between the work the federal National Guard troops and the Texas National Guard troops do at the border.
• The situation at the border has been a crisis for years now, Brown said.
• More support personnel should be hired to handle transporting and processing migrants so that border patrol agents can focus on law enforcement at the border.
