New satellite images show the Russian military is refitting old Soviet bases in the Arctic and building new ones. One reason for the activity is ice melt from climate change.
- Sharon Burke, Senior Advisor at New America, said the United States’ Arctic strategy should take into consideration climate change’s long-term impact on the world as well as short-term effects on regional activity.
- Coordination with partners and allies in the region will be critical for success, said Burke.
- The United States should look more at China’s strategy, which focuses on economics, presence and projection, than at Russia’s strategy, said Burke.
