Congress has directed the secretary of defense to report on food insecurity among service members and their dependents. The secretary’s office asked the RAND Corporation to provide research on that issue.
Food insecurity among service members has been an issue for a while, Thomas Trail, senior behavioral scientist at the RAND Corporation said.
The data for this recent report were provided by the Department of Defense through a survey it conducts every two years which tries to get a representative sample of service members, Trail explained.
26 percent of service members face food insecurity, according to Trail.
Not many service members use federal food assistance programs such as SNAP because many do not qualify for the program, he stated.
