Admiral Linda Fagan made history when she became the 27th commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard in June. She is the first woman to lead a military branch and the Coast Guard’s first female four-star admiral.

  • One of Fagan’s priorities is transforming the workforce. She told Government Matters she is focused on making it easier for people to enter the Coast Guard and has challenged her team to question assumptions when it comes to the traditional talent management system.
  • She said the Coast Guard is very committed to suicide prevention in the workforce and is working to increase access to mental health care and intervention training.
  • Fagan said she is committed to continuing the acquisition work of her predecessors, during the largest acquisition since World War II. “I’m really excited about the new, state-of-the-art assets that we are building,” she said.
  • The Coast Guard’s modernization efforts extend to the Arctic, and Fagan said the service is on budget for new Polar Security Cutters, which are critical to national security and sovereignty.
  • She said the service is putting together a climate strategy, investing in resilient infrastructure and working to minimize its own environmental impact.
  • She also previewed the upcoming four-year strategy, with one of the highlights being a focus on artificial intelligence.
  • Fagan offered advice to other female leaders in government, saying, “be yourself, be bold and you can do it. Women, I think, bring a great perspective into leadership.”
