There are 161 potentially active volcanos across the country. The latest to erupt is Mauna Loa on Hawaii’s Big Island.
- Many of the volcanos in the U.S. are on the West Coast in California, Washington, Oregon, Alaska and Yellowstone National Park, Andria Ellis, geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey at Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, explained.
- One of the signs an eruption is imminent is increased seismicity, or frequent small earthquakes, in the surrounding area, she said.
- It is unclear how long the eruption will last, according to Ellis, but historically, eruptions can last anywhere from days or weeks to years.
