The Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. David Berger has the first published update to his Force Design 2030, a modernization initiative for optimizing the force. Gen. Berger says divesting legacy systems is only one part of building the service he will need in nine more years.

  • Col. James McGinley, Co-Chair of the USMC Affairs Committee at the Navy League, said he expects the Marine Corps will constantly iterate and create new versions of Force Design 2030 to respond to changing threats.
  • McGinley said the Force Design 2030 document demonstrates to the Chinese people how the United States intends to deter war or win if conflict escalates.
  • The Marine Corps is uniquely situated to allow the United States to respond to threats without the response being misinterpreted as escalation, McGinley added.
