President Biden recently announced major changes to stop the record surge of migrants crossing into the country illegally.
- Biden announced that anyone in Mexico coming to the U.S. border can now schedule an appointment through a phone app to request asylum legally at a point of entry, David Bier, associate director of immigration studies at the Cato Institute, said.
- The Department of Homeland Security created a sponsorship program that says the U.S. will allow 30,000 Haitians, Cubans, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans to enter the U.S. legally in exchange for Mexico accepting the people of those nationalities expelled under Title 42 back, he explained.
- The sponsorship program will make a significant difference in the number of people crossing the border illegally, according to Bier.
