Carmen Malone, Deputy Assistant IG for Audit, Financial Mgmt. & Reporting at DoD OIG, details the latest Pentagon audit results, and the outlook for future audits.

The results from the latest Department of Defense audit show improvement, but there’s still room for more. Carmen Malone, Deputy Assistant IG for Audit, Financial Management & Reporting at DoD OIG, says it’s important that the current tone of the agency towards audits should be sustained.

“It’s even more important that the tone continues to be pushed down to all levels of command. At this point, what we’re seeing is the Secretary of Defense, the Deputy Secretary of Defense, they’re all highly engaged in this audit. They all understand the importance of this audit and they’re able to talk about its impact on operations,” Malone said. “As long as we can continue to get that tone and push it further down, the Navy is another great example where we saw top leaders go out to the local bases with the auditors and we saw significant progress in those areas when the leadership was involved.
