The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Office of Information and Technology is innovating its tech tools to support the overall mission of the VA. IT investment management can benefit both veterans and the department. Leading the charge is Paul Brubaker, acting principal deputy assistant secretary at the VA Office of Information and Technology.

  • Brubaker said his office has been working to address infrastructure readiness issues highlighted by the pandemic, which greatly stressed the system, and identifying needed investments.
  • He said the team is developing roadmaps to help systematically guide IT investments that have measurable improvements in outcomes.
  • The office is building multiple mobile apps that face veterans, incorporating human-centered design with focus groups and working with the Veterans Benefits Administration to deploy technology to reduce the claims backlog, said Brubaker.
