There are still many questions about the response to the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol, but new emails obtained by Insider show how the Defense Department (DoD) was gathering information and responding behind the scenes.

  • The evidence indicates there was caution and concern but “no overwhelming fear of violence” inside DoD in the days leading up to Jan. 6, according to David Levinthal, deputy editor at Insider.
  • During the event, Pentagon officials were getting updates from media reports, other government agencies and people from DoD on the ground. Some department officials and members of the military were surprised and shocked that President Trump did not reach out to them and were trying to understand what they needed to do, said Levinthal.
  • He said Insider is expecting more records as a result of a FOIA lawsuit.
