The Biden administration will propose a budget of $753 billion for national security when it sends its official budget request to Congress later this month, $715 billion of which is for the Defense Department. This is restarting discussion of where money comes from for defense.

  • Miranda Priebe, Director of the Center for Analysis of U.S. Grand Strategy at the RAND Corporation, said if the United States invests in civilian infrastructure for domestic reasons, it will have positive effects on national security too.
  • Priebe explained that infrastructure spending leads to a larger economy, which becomes the basis for which the country makes future defense spending.
  • It is important to have a long-term mentality when thinking about competition with China because it is a challenge the United States will probably have to respond to for decades, said Priebe.
