Mika Cross, federal workplace expert, details ways the government can use the new direct hiring authorities and other tools at their disposal to grow their workforce.

In early October, the Office of Personnel Management announced new Direct Hire Authorities for technical fields. As part of MITRE’s recent workforce report, the organization recommended expanding these hiring authorities to further grow the government’s employee base. Mika Cross, federal workplace expert, says that agencies already have tools to get new employees that they aren’t taking advantage of.   “When we’re talking about hiring and bringing in the right candidates with the right sets of skills, branding their agency [is important], working with their PR team and social media team, to cast the net wide and get the attention of candidates who might not have otherwise considered a career in public service before,” Cross said. “We also have competitive benefits that don’t cost a dime to implement– Part time employment, part time programs, telework.”
