Janet Vogel, chief information security officer at HHS, discusses the unique security threats that her agency faces, and how her background gives her an advantage in the space.

As an agency with a largely personal mission for citizens, the Department of Health and Human Services has a different threat environment to the rest of the government. Collaboration between the agency’s offices allow for these security issues to be dealt with efficiently. Janet Vogel, chief information security officer, says that her financial management experience gives her a unique perspective on technology issues.

“My experience with information technology and different business areas gives me the opportunity to look at how security would fit into that business capability. How do apply it, how to prioritize it and make it secure.” Vogel said. “It also gives me an advantage, I think, because I have little bit of understanding of the language and the business. So often we don’t communicate and integrate because we don’t speak the same language. In information technology it’s true. We have lots of acronyms and our area of specialty. Until we can speak very plainly and get people to understand us, we won’t get very far.”
