Larry Allen, president of Allen Federal Business Partners, discusses what the extension of the government’s telecom selection means for agencies and industry.

The General Services Administration has extended the deadline for the Enterprise Infrastructure Solutions telecom contract. The final date for contract selection has been pushed back a year, with the option to extend it by another two. This means that the existing Networx contracts could continue until 2023. Larry Allen, president of Allen Federal Business Partners, says that GSA should stay on top of the contract, and make good use of the extra time.

“I think we run the real risk of having all three years of this extension used up. GSA needs to use a carrot and stick approach,” Allen said. “They need incentives for agencies to transition over. Not just lift and shift what they have, but to really get to state‑of‑the‑art systems that will improve functionality, and meet the needs of the workforce today that isn’t in‑house as it was the last time most of this stuff was acquired. And they’re also going to need to show a little tough love to the agencies.”
