A new High-Risk List from the Government Accountability Office, identifying programs vulnerable to waste, fraud, abuse or mismanagement, or in need of transformation, shows two new entries and one exit. The GAO rolled out the list at the House Oversight and Reform Committee hearing this week.
- Gene Dodaro, Comptroller General of the United States and head of GAO, said he wanted to convey that we need greater leadership to address limited progress overall.
- Dodaro said the Defense Department’s Support Infrastructure Management successfully got off the list by reducing office and warehouse space, eliminating properties, reducing leasing costs and other steps.
- The Small Business Administration’s Emergency Loans for Small Businesses made it onto the list due to lack of detailed oversight plans, according to Dodaro.
- The other new addition was National Efforts to Prevent, Respond to, and Recover from Drug Misuse, which Dodaro said is a major problem that needs greater federal leadership and more assertiveness and coordination from the Office of National Drug Control Policy.
