On top of the Covid-19 pandemic, ongoing economic recovery and natural disasters, the federal government almost faced another government shutdown. The threat of a shutdown makes government unnecessarily difficult, according to Max Stier, president and CEO of the Partnership for Public Service.
- Stier said government shutdowns hurt everyone by distracting civil servants from critical issues, such as the Covid-19 pandemic, climate change and national security.
- Stier said the proposed Prevent Government Shutdowns Act is a promising solution that would change the default from a shutdown to a continuing resolution.
- Stier said government as a whole needs an overhaul and that some ideas include biannual budgets, more enterprise-wide budgeting and a reduction in Senate-confirmed positions.
