In this two-part interview, Secretary of the U.S. Army Mark Esper details the branch’s modernization priorities and discusses topics such as base housing, recruitment, and recent confirmation hearings.
The congressional Armed Services committees are deliberating on FY20’s spending, and the Army’s ready to defend their budget request on Capitol Hill. The request includes funds for the branch’s six modernization priorities, including future vertical lift. Mark Esper, Secretary of the U.S. Army, told Government Matters that improving aircraft is so important to the Army, that they’re halting funding to some of their current programs. “The one that comes up in the context of heavy vertical lift is the CH-47. It’s a very good aircraft. It’s been in the inventory since 1962. It has had a series of upgrades over time. But in order to fund those programs I know I must have to have to fight in the future, I had to halt that.”
