The Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medals, or Sammies, have been dubbed the “Oscars of government service.” The Partnership for Public Service gives out the awards annually to extraordinary federal employees who have made the country better, safer and stronger.
- With public trust in government low and on the decline, the Partnership has found that telling stories on an individual level is the best way to counter that skepticism, explained Jordan LaPier, senior communications manager who administers the awards.
- He said there are 30 finalists this year and six categories and that the process involves several months of collecting nominations and considering them through talking to agencies and people to understand the stories.
