Out of 1.3 million active duty service members, over 2,000 families foster or adopt children. But the Government Accountability Office (GAO) says military families are not aware of benefits they can receive from the Defense Department’s enrollment program.
- Kathy Larin, director of education, workforce and income security at GAO, said her office recommends the Defense Department ensure guidance they are using to help enroll families in the military benefits system is consistent with regulations in order to clear up confusion about eligibility.
- Larin said military families often face challenges when fostering or adopting children because the process can be interrupted if they have to move during that time.
- Larin said GAO recommends the Defense Department consolidate and promote information about support available to foster and adoptive families.
