The House of Representatives Subcommittee on Government Operations wants to improve recruitment and retention of younger federal workers. A new bill, the Building the Next Generation of Federal Employees Act (NextGenFeds Act), would establish a comprehensive internship and fellowship program at the Office of Personnel Management.
- Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA), chairman of the House Subcommittee on Government Operations, said he introduced the bill to establish a system to improve internship and fellowship experiences and make them more consistent across agencies.
- Connolly said about 70-80% of interns in the private sector receive and accept permanent employment offers, whereas this number is in the single digits in the federal government.
- He said the initiative, which he does not think will be very expensive, will help with recruitment and retention of federal employees.
