The Technology Modernization Fund could get as much as $1 billion in funding if the Senate’s version of stimulus legislation passes. The bill includes cash for the U.S. Digital Service too.

  • Former Federal Chief Information Officers Suzette Kent and Tony Scott agree this funding would be very beneficial for modernization, cybersecurity and the ability to move quickly towards goals.
  • Scott, who was CIO when the TMF started, said he is not in favor of the idea of making it more like a grant than a loan, stating, “I think it’s just a fundamental human principle that you value things that you pay for … more than something that’s just an out-and-out gift.”
  • Kent said one of the components that has been transformational about the TMF process is that it requires unity and discussion amongst the IT team, the CFO and other parts of the agencies.
