The Joint Artificial Intelligence Center (JAIC) will lead artificial intelligence implementation at the Pentagon, according to a new department-wide memo. That memo orders the JAIC director to develop a responsible AI ecosystem for the department.
- Robert Work, former deputy secretary of defense and co-chair of the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence, recommends establishing a technology competitiveness council under the vice president to create national strategies for seven important emerging technologies.
- Work explained that biotechnology, including synthetic biology, the ability to program and edit genes and other markers, will have an approximate economic impact of $4 trillion in the next 10 years and is critical to national competitiveness.
- Work said artificial intelligence is essential for protection against the malicious use of biotechnology, including genomic and pathogenic weapons.
