Representatives Gerry Connolly and Darrell Issa want to consolidate the chief information officer (CIO) role across the federal workplace. The idea to reduce each agency to one CIO has been discussed for almost a decade.
- Karen Evans, partner at KE&T Partners and former CIO for the Department of Energy, said the suggestion comes up periodically and has surfaced again in the current cybersecurity threat landscape.
- Evans thinks it is a good idea because the departmental CIO is the one held accountable by Congress and to the secretary.
- Alan Balutis, former senior director and distinguished fellow at Cisco Systems and the first CIO at the Commerce Department, said he also thinks it is a good idea but not the most critical issue that needs to be addressed.
