One of the biggest focuses of the White House budget for the 2019 fiscal year is cybersecurity, but that’s not all it says about maintaining computer networks. Within the proposal, an estimated $92 billion is budgeted towards federal IT services. While that number is an educated guess by Bloomberg, some of the proposed funding would go directly to modernization efforts. “The I.T. budget specifically talks about agencies needing to report on risky legacy I.T. systems and how they are going to improve those,” said Laura Criste, federal market analyst at Bloomberg Government. “And the budget does ask for $210 million for a central I.T. fund where agencies can ask for money to help out with modernizing those risky legacy systems. It will be interesting to see if money moves from the operations and maintenance programs into development, modernization and enhancement funds.” Even though the proposal has a high budget for these programs, Criste emphasizes that none of this is final, as we still don’t know what FY 2018 holds. “We don’t actually know what this year is going to look like. We are almost halfway through the fiscal year and we are still on a continuing resolution, we’re still looking at a year that looks a lot like fiscal year 2017,” Criste said. “If the budget passes though, there’s a lot of money to be spent in a little bit of time.”
