A new report written by nearly a dozen organizations across the country calls for changes to the disaster recovery system.

  • Maddie Sloan, director of the Disaster Recovery and Fair Housing project at Texas Appleseed, explained that the current disaster recovery system is based on the assumptions that disasters are infrequent, localized and that they can be handled effectively by the state or local government.
  • There are barriers to applying for federal aid such as needing access to internet, something survivors of natural disasters may not have, she said.
  • Survivors of natural disasters encourage data sharing among agencies to streamline the process for applying for and receiving aid, according to Sloan.
