The Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) was founded in 2009 under the Department of Energy. Since then, it has funded over 1,000 high-risk, high-reward projects.

  • The agency focuses on increasing energy efficiency, reducing emissions and solving energy problems, said Jennifer Gerbi, acting director.
  • There is a detailed application and review process to select which projects to invest in, and ARPA-E works very closely with the teams.
  • Some of ARPA-E’s investments have been in battery improvement technology and carbon storage buildings, said Gerbi.
  • The ARPA model is successful because it allows for a culture that embraces high-risk work, she explained.
