Mika Cross, federal workplace expert and Vice President of Employer Engagement and Strategic Initiatives at FlexJobs, discusses the Office of Personnel Management’s new rule on direct-hire authority and how agencies will handle onboarding future employees.

The Office of Personnel Management implemented a new rule last week regarding direct-hire authority, giving government agencies guidance for onboarding IT talent in less time than before. Mika Cross, federal workplace expert and Vice President of Employer Engagement and Strategic Initiatives at FlexJobs, says that the new rule will affect how progress is made on adding new employees. “I think this new direct hiring authority is really a great opportunity for agencies to do things a little bit differently. I know that a lot of agencies focus very much on enhancing the on-boarding experience. I really do believe taking a page out of best practices from private industry is key with implementing this successfully,” Cross tells Government Matters. “Thinking how to implement enhancements to the candidate experience up front will help agencies really implement rapid hiring and effective strategic hiring on the back end once they apply the direct hiring requirements.”
