As the United States deals with the Covid-19 pandemic, supply shortages and rising tensions with China, the Air Force has to manage risks to its supply chain, essentially comprised of everything the Department needs to maintain its weapons systems.

  • Stephen Gray, director of the 448th Supply Chain Management Wing at the Air Force Sustainment Center, said two strategies have helped his team improve supply chain resiliency: having the ability to make the parts themselves, and keeping enough inventory on hand in case problems arise.
  • Gray said the pandemic has caused disruptions that create “air pockets” in the supply chain, interrupting the flow of material to bases.
  • Gray said technology is critical and that advanced data analytics enable him and other leaders to make better decisions and identify vulnerabilities in the supply chain.
