Chairman of the Veterans Affairs Committee Rep. Mark Takano (D-CA) discusses turnover at the VA, and how Congress is addressing concerns about veteran suicide.

The Veteran Affairs Deputy Secretary Byrne was fired this week for reasons related to his “abilities,” according to VA Secretary Wilkie. Chairman of the Veterans Affairs Committee Rep. Mark Takano (D-CA) says that leadership needs to be consistent in a citizen-focused agency like VA.

“I have been on the Veterans Affairs Committee since I arrived in Congress in 2013. I’m in my 8th year of Congress. I can tell you that the instability at the top of leadership, regardless of the administration, is harmful for veterans and harmful for the department,” Takano said. “It is hard to push through changes we need to make when you have leaders that have a tenure that only exists for at most two or three years. That goes for the top leadership as well. You need people that can execute decisions.”
