Last week the Government Matters team attended the Navy League’s Sea-Air-Space conference. Managing Director Allan Holmes spoke with Steve Butow, director of the Space Portfolio at the Defense Innovation Unit.
- Butow said the Space Portfolio facilitated U.S. companies’ production of small synthetic aperture radar satellites, which can perform day, night and all-weather monitoring, improving the Navy’s maritime domain awareness.
- Butow said the Defense Innovation Unit was created in 2015 by the secretary of defense to accelerate adoption of commercial technology to transform future capabilities and grow the national security innovation base.
- Butow said the fact that about 60% of tactical forces in all services are between ages 18 and 24 has helped with technology adoption.
